Kelmscott Communications along with Aurora leaders and child advocates unveil new signage and provide an update of the Safe Haven Law for newborn infants
Aurora, IL – April 17, 2008 – Scott Voris, President, and Ric Jais, Sales Associate, from Kelmscott Communications along with representatives from the City of Aurora, the Save Abandoned Babies Foundation, Rush-Copley Medical Center, Provena Mercy Medical Center and the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services gathered Tuesday, April 08, 2008 at Aurora Fire Station Number 8 to unveil the new signage which has been placed at all of the Safe Havens across Aurora, all manned Fire Stations, Police Stations and Hospitals. Also a presentation was given by each of the participants providing an update on how the law is working to keep newborn babies safe in Illinois. The goal is to increase the public awareness of the Safe Haven Law by introducing the new signage.
On April 8th, cities and communities across Illinois were unveiling their new signage at Safe Havens. The signs on the exterior of local Safe Havens were mandated by a 2007 amendment to Illinois Safe Haven Law to indicate where a parent who cannot care for a newborn, up to 7 days old, can anonymously relinquish the unharmed baby to a staff member without fear of prosecution for abandonment. The law is intended to give parents in crisis a safe option in their babies’ first days of life, which is when infants are at highest risk of being killed or abandoned illegally. All 50 states have now passed Baby Safe Haven laws.
